A Sailor's Dream

(Doc Schneider (sung by Jeff Jacobs))
A Sailor's Dream (1978)

[For the geographically curious: The countries of northern Africa that lie along the Mediterranean Sea comprise the Barbary Coast. The countries are Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. The name Barbary Coast comes from the Berber people of the region but the name became associated with pirates of the 16th through 19th centuries.]

Got a handful of sand
that I stole from the Barbary Coast
got some old red wine
that I haven't opened quite yet
and pinned up to my porthole
a girl from the hometown -
and I think I'll have a sailor's dream tonight
God, I'm sure I'll have a sailor's dream tonight

Got a picture of you
I stole from a high school prom
got an old dead rose
that ain't lost its scent quite yet
and pinned up to my porthole
a girl from the hometown -
and I think I'll have a sailor's dream tonight,
God, I'm sure I'll have a sailor's dream tonight.

I look around me
the eyes that surround me
they tell me I've been here before
the girls from old Newport
the boys from the best port
are drinking and singing once more
and the girl from the pin-up
is holding me tight
and I swear I had a sailor's dream tonight
God, I'm sure I had a sailor's dream tonight

Well, my sands are all gone
and my floor looks like Barbary Coast
if my wine ain't gone
then I know that it is almost
and pinned up to my porthole
the girl from the hometown
and I swear I had a sailor's dream tonight
God, I 'm sure I had a sailor's dream tonight

I look around me
the eyes that surround me
they tell me I've been here before
the girls from old Newport
the boys from the best port
are drinking and singing once more
and the girl from the pin-up
is holding me tight
and I swear I had a sailor's dream tonight
God, I'm sure I had a sailor's dream tonight
